On July 21, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) launches the Colorado Speed Enforcement Program in Colorado work zones, starting with Colorado Highway 119 between Boulder and Longmont. In 2024, speeding was the most common cause of fatal crashes in Colorado. The dangers of speeding are especially high in work zones, where challenging conditions and vulnerable roadside workers create hazardous circumstances. According to the Federal Highway Administration, point-to-point speed cameras can reduce crashes by 37%.
Automated speed cameras on CO 119 will start with a grace period of at least 30 days, during which each violator will be issued one warning. Following the grace period, civil penalties of $75 for speed violations will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.
