This winter’s warm weather brought out almost 1,000 Boulder bicyclists – and rollerbladers, babies in trailers, pets, and pedestrians – on Winter Bike to Work Day, Friday, February 13. Of the 2,900 people who registered to ride throughout the Denver Metro area, 958 were from Boulder.
At our Boulder Chamber Breakfast Superstation, 380 happy people enjoyed coffee and hot chocolate from Ampersand Coffee, breakfast burritos from Bridge House’s Community Table Kitchen, and doughnuts from Voodoo Doughnuts from 7 to 9 am.
Boulder Chamber Transportation Connections and the Boulder Chamber hosted seven partner organizations and businesses at our superstation, including the Boulder Police Department, which gave out 116 free, high-quality U-locks when riders registered their bikes on Bike Index. Via Mobility Services shared information about how they serve our community, including with paratransit services, providing second-responder support during emergencies, and operating the HOP circulator bus.
CDOT’s speed enforcement team handed out hand warmers and provided updates on the new speed cameras along CO 119, the Diagonal Highway. Hoplark handed out samples of their variety of nonalcoholic hop-based beverages, while beemLight Sauna introduced people to their red light and infrared therapies. The entrepreneur behind Stowe Trunks showcased her innovative product for secure, weather-proof storage that attaches onto almost any bicycle rack. Attendees also learned about the City of Boulder’s Core Arterial Network and the collaborative draft Comprehensive Plan Update, debuting next month.
Nearby in the Boulder Junction neighborhood, hundreds of happy cyclists and walkers enjoyed more breakfast stations, including one at S’Park Apartments, where riders “adopted” more than 70 “Riding Buddy” handlebar duck ornaments to decorate their bikes. Riders also enjoyed Earl Grey biscuits from Willow’s Wonderful Treats (baked in Boulder Junction and delivered car-free!) with hot tea from Dushanbe Teahouse.
Around the corner on 30th Street, Crepe Therapy Café greeted more than 200 visitors enthralled by their delicious Ivory Coast hot cocoa, and Mike’s Bikes offered a mini fire pit, along with free bike safety check-ups, energy waffles and O.W.L Coffee. In addition to hosting a booth at the Boulder Chamber Superstation, beemLight Sauna also offered hydrating beverage samples and 2-for-1 Red Light therapy/sauna sessions.
