Friday, February 9, was a Winter Bike to Work Day for the books! Boulder Transportation Connections (BTC) and the Boulder Chamber welcomed nearly 200 early-bird riders at our breakfast super station between 7:00 and 9:00 am, handing out 150 breakfast burritos in the first hour alone.
Riders arrived in style, some sporting festive costumes for Mardi Gras and others accompanying children and pets. BTC handed out purple Polar Bear Cyclist 2024 patches donated by The Cyclist Lawyer and DRCOG’s Way to Go program.
While warming up with coffee and hot chocolate and enjoying breakfast burritos, bagels and fruit, riders chatted with representatives of BTC’s partner organizations, including Via Mobility, Lime, and the Boulder Police Department (BPD). Officer Mitch Trujillo of the BPD encouraged riders to register their bikes with Bike Index, a nonprofit bicycle registry that aids in recovery of stolen bikes.
BTC staff member Will Shepherd supported another breakfast station at Cassi’s Coffee by Cassiopeia in the Boulder Junction neighborhood. More than 60 riders stopped by for waffles and picked up information about EcoPasses, BCycle memberships and other transportation benefits available to Boulder Junction residents and employees.
Later in the day, about 80 riders, including several Boulder City Council members and Mayor Aaron Brockett, joined the Bike Home Happy Hour at The Local. The crowd mingled and chatted about several city projects, including the Iris Avenue Transportation Improvements Project, the Core Arterial Network, multi-modal improvements to 30th Street, and the city’s snow and ice response. Happy Hour host Community Cycles held a drawing and gave out popular Winter Bike to Work Day polar bear neck gaiters.
